Ganton & Hazelhead Courts, Ardler Dundee

Two 18 storey blocks of flats were demolished by explosives, as part of the regeneration of the Ardler estate.

Each block comprised three separate but adjoining structures with a total of over 300 flats per block.

With experience of a similar project in Ardler, two years earlier, a collapse mechanism was designed to greatly reduce the amount of explosives used. Pre-weakening and strategically placed explosives at just one upper blast floor, minimised air over pressure and vibration levels.

A large exclusion zone requiring the evacuation of nearby residents coupled with Safedem’s unrivalled levels of protection to explosive charges, ensured the structures were demolished safely exactly as planned.
